The US government is considering sending advanced long-range missile systems to Ukraine. The US-made weapons systems could fire missiles at ranges of hundreds of kilometers, CNN broadcaster reported Thursday, citing several officials. A new military aid package could be announced as early as next week. Ukraine asked for these kinds of weapons, it said.
However, the US administration is hesitant for fear that Ukraine could use the missile systems to attack Russian territory. The question is whether this could lead to Russian retaliation, according to CNN.
New aid package already in effect
US President Joe Biden introduced a new multi-billion dollar aid package for Ukraine this weekend with a volume of nearly $40 billion (about 38 billion euros). About half of the total amount from the package goes to defense. Of this, $6 billion is earmarked for direct military aid to Ukraine.
Billions more will be used, among other things, to replenish US stockpiles of military equipment sent to Ukraine. The US government had previously launched several major aid packages for Ukraine.
