A shop owner in Iran has now been sentenced to two years in prison for publishing photos of herself without a headscarf. Authorities had previously closed their business.
Seinab Cheniabpur was also sentenced to three months in prison in early December in another case for “propaganda against the state,” human rights network HRANA said on Friday. Since protests against the regime began over a year ago, more and more women have been ignoring the obligation to wear a headscarf.
The state continues to respond with extreme severity. The trigger for the most serious protests in Iran’s history to date was the death of the young Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini, who allegedly violated the obligation to wear a headscarf and was subsequently arrested by the infamous moral watchdogs. She fell into a coma and died a short time later.
Months later, young people in particular took to the streets to protest against the Islamic system of rule. Protesters were arrested and even executed. Around the anniversary of Amini’s death, Iranian authorities are said to have arrested another 260 people, including for violating public security or inciting protests.
