Fraud lawsuit: – Prosecutor demands $370 million in fines for Trump

Date:

In the fraud trial against former American president Donald Trump, the Public Prosecution Service is demanding a fine of 370 million dollars (338 million euros). This is evident from a letter published on Friday from the Attorney General of the American state of New York, Letitia James. The new amount significantly exceeds the $250 million payment previously demanded by Trump. Trump faces no risk of jail time or repercussions for his presidential bid.

Judge Arthur Engoron is expected to decide the sentence in the civil case this month. The proceedings concern the future of the 77-year-old’s business empire.

The Public Prosecution Service accuses Trump, his sons and associates of manipulating the value of the Trump Organization for years to obtain cheaper loans and insurance contracts. Judge Engoron had already confirmed this before the trial. The emphasis of the procedure is now mainly on determining possible fines and other charges.

Republican Trump is not threatened with a prison sentence or a direct impact on his presidential candidacy, but a conviction could cause him major business damage. In addition to the fine, Trump risks a ban from doing business in New York. The former president wants to be re-elected in 2024. He is the most promising candidate for the Republican nomination. According to many observers, he is using the trial as election advertising.
