After the deadly rain of rockets on Kiev and Kharkiv in recent days, the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk was targeted by Russian attackers on Saturday. According to regional authorities, 11 people were killed in an attack with S-300 anti-aircraft missiles.
Five children were among the dead, the governor of the Donetsk region, Vadym Filaschkin, wrote on Telegram. Pokrovsk is located about 80 km northwest of Donetsk, the Russian-occupied center of the region.
Filashkin had earlier reported that six private houses in the municipalities of Svirove and Pokrovsk had been damaged by Russian shelling. One person was rescued from the rubble, two other people were buried. A search operation is underway, the governor said, according to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform. In the village of Rivne, a rocket hit the house of a family of six, the military governor added.
Zelensky: “No attack is without consequences for a terrorist state”
President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his condolences to the relatives. He assured that search and rescue efforts would continue and the injured would be cared for. Russia shot at purely civilian targets. “And Russia must feel – every time – that none of these attacks will end without consequences for the terrorist state,” he demanded.
Attacks on military infrastructure in Crimea
While Russian attacks have been targeting the Donetsk region for weeks, Ukraine is targeting the occupying forces’ military infrastructure in Crimea’s Black Sea peninsula. The Ukrainian military announced on Saturday that a Russian command point at Saky Airport in Crimea had been destroyed that night. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that four Ukrainian missiles were shot down by its own air defense system in Crimea during the night.
