In Italy, videos of a neo-fascist rally are currently causing outrage, with hundreds of participants raising their right arms in the air and showing the fascist salute. This is not only prohibited in Austria, but also in our neighboring country.
In Italy, the gesture is known as ‘saluto romano’ (Roman salute) and is often displayed at rallies of neo-fascists. The most recent incident took place in Rome on Sunday evening. People met on the anniversary of the so-called Acca Larentia murders. On January 7, 1978, left-wing terrorists shot two young neo-fascists in Via Acca Larentia, and a third later died.
Since then, commemorations have taken place annually in front of the former headquarters of the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), a movement founded by Mussolini supporters, among others. This time, the participants of the meeting raised their right arms and gave the fascist salute. Newspapers such as “La Repubblica” and “La Stampa” subsequently published videos of the scene.

They are mainly people dressed in black
The videos show how people, often dressed in black, respond to the call “For all fallen comrades” with the cry “Presente!” (in German: present) and raise their right arms in the air in a fascist salute. After three repetitions of the greeting, the group disperses. A few hours earlier, an official commemoration of the murders of Acca Larentia was held at the same location with the president of the Lazio region, Francesco Rocca.
The incident has now sparked outrage, especially among left-wing groups and the opposition. “Rome, January 7, 2024. And it feels like 1924. What happened is unacceptable,” wrote Social Democratic opposition politician Elly Schlein. The government under Giorgia Meloni must take action against such incidents. However, Meloni’s right-wing party is a successor to the MSI.
