After this incident, little Barrett may no longer be allowed to play with his mother’s cell phone unsupervised: In an inattentive moment, the two-year-old boy in Texas ordered as many as 31 cheeseburgers via a delivery app. When the unexpected delivery arrived, the mother of need made virtue and nurtured her neighborhood.
Three kids and the stress of working from home: Texas Kelsey Golden had no qualms when her two-year-old son Barrett recently grabbed her cell phone to play with it. The boy likes to entertain himself with the camera of the smartphone, the mother reports. “He likes to look at his reflection in the mirror.”
This time, however, the two-year-old wasn’t just looking at his reflection. Golden: “He started pressing the screen and swinging the smartphone around like his arm was on a roller coaster.” Then suddenly a message came from the delivery service DoorDash: your order took longer than usual, the Texan was told.
Delivery man came with a huge bag of McDonalds
Strange: She sometimes uses DoorDash to have lunch delivered to her other two kids. That day, however, she packed them some snacks, Golden recalls. Moments later, when a car pulled up in the driveway, she realized what had happened. “Just as I was playing with Barrett on the porch, a car pulled up. I went — and the delivery guy pulled out a giant McDonald’s bag.” Inside: no less than 31 cheeseburgers.
At first she suspected that the delivery person had made a mistake in the house. “That’s when it dawned on me that Barrett had tampered with my phone. I checked and an order had indeed been placed,” says Golden. The unexpected fast-food binge didn’t really help. “I thought, oh my gosh, he really did. And no one in our family likes cheeseburgers.” The boy had spent about $90 on the burger, including a generous 25 percent tip.
Burgers were handed out to neighbors
In the end, Golden made a virtue of necessity: Barrett and his stash of cheeseburgers were photographed and posted to a local Facebook group. Golden invited neighbors to pick up a burger. “Then it kind of exploded. A pregnant woman came by, she wanted six. I’m not judging that.” Some of the needy also picked up a meal after an inadvertent order from Barrett.
Barrett and his mother sparked a lot of conversation on Facebook. Eventually, even the McDonald’s branch where Barrett ordered the 31 burgers got in touch. The boy was allowed to look behind the scenes, meet employees and mascots and pick out a snack. According to CNN — apparently he’d had enough of cheeseburgers — Barrett opted for chicken nuggets.
