A surprise appearance by US President Hunter Biden in the House of Representatives caused great outrage among Republicans. The 53-year-old appeared without notice during opening statements at a public meeting of the oversight committee on Wednesday – and took a front row seat with his lawyer.
The panel wants to charge Hunter Biden with contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena for a closed-door hearing on the impeachment inquiry into his father, US President Joe Biden.
Tumults while hearing
His unexpected appearance caused chaotic scenes. Several Republicans felt provoked by Hunter Biden’s actions, and two lawmakers called him a coward. The chairman of the committee sometimes had difficulty restoring order in the meeting.
Hunter Biden, who is accused of possible tax crimes, among other things, had refused to testify behind closed doors before the committee, but offered to testify at a public hearing late last year.
Fear of misrepresentation
The president’s son and his lawyers argued that his comments could be selectively reproduced in public behind closed doors by Republicans and thus manipulated. He therefore insisted on testifying only in public.
Many Republicans associate Hunter Biden’s affairs with the American president. Republicans in the House continue the investigation into possible impeachment proceedings against Joe Biden. They accuse the Democrat of abusing his public office for the financial benefit of his family.
Republicans have no evidence
However, they have not yet provided clear evidence of serious misconduct. The question is whether the investigation can actually lead to impeachment proceedings.
The Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee each want to vote on whether Hunter Biden should be tried for contempt of Congress. The full House of Representatives would then have to decide whether to recommend criminal charges.
A decision on possible charges based on the allegations would ultimately rest with the Justice Department.
