An act of violence in Graz led to the discovery of fraud: a 49-year-old was said to grab his wife’s arms and pull her hair in the middle of the night last weekend. When she screamed for help, neighbors heard her and alerted the police. It turned out that the man attacked her because the 48-year-old had sent thousands of euros to a stranger she met online.
As the police headquarters in Styria announced on Friday, the man wanted to prevent the woman from transferring money to a Turkish account again on Sunday evening. He wanted to take her cell phone and so an argument arose, which led to the police action.
In love with alleged soldiers
The 48-year-old told officials she had fallen in love with the stranger – he was a soldier. She has been in contact with him for weeks and he wants to visit her in Austria. However, he was kidnapped, tied up and held captive, and now needs a ransom to buy his freedom.
The woman from Graz believed her new acquaintance and transferred all her savings, even selling her clothes in public places to get more money. She transferred money from her son and took out a loan. At no point did the demands strike her as suspicious. The total damage amounts to tens of thousands of euros.
