A Greek tanker flying the flag of the Marshall Islands was hijacked by unknown parties in the Persian Gulf on Thursday in waters 50 nautical miles east of Oman.
The tanker had been loaded in the Iraqi port of Basra and was en route to the Turkish port of Aliaga on the west coast of Turkey.
Armed men wore uniforms and masks
British maritime security firm Ambrey said the tanker’s tracking system was disabled while it was en route to the Iranian port of Bandar e-Jask on the northern coast of the Gulf of Oman. The gunmen wore black uniforms and masks.
It is not yet known who occupied the ship. According to the location service TankerTrackers, the tanker would be the “St. Nikolas” act. Athens-based shipping company Empire Navigation, owner of the tanker, confirmed the incident.
