An 83-year-old man died in a fire at his house in Manhartsbrunn in the Mistelbach district (Lower Austria). He was found dead on Wednesday.
The man may have been working in the basement. The victim’s clothing caught fire. He died while trying to remove the cloak, the Lower Austria State Police Directorate said in a broadcast on Thursday.
Found lifeless
The 83-year-old did not contact his partner on Wednesday. A relative eventually drove to the house in the cadastral community of Manhartsbrunn to check on him. He saw heavy smoke developing in the basement of the house and raised the alarm.
The pensioner was found dead in the front room of the basement. At that moment the fire had already gone out.
Negligence of third parties excluded
The investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by the State Criminal Police of Lower Austria, together with the district fire investigator and the Federal Criminal Police Office. Negligence of third parties must be excluded.
