The town of Monfalcone in the Italian region of Friuli has declared war on an unsavory custom: spitting is banned there as a punishment. Anyone caught must pay a maximum of 200 euros.
Mayor Anna Maria Cisint wants to introduce a regulation for decency and cleanliness; violations are punished with 30 to 200 euros.
The scheme follows the scheme introduced last year against cigarette butts being thrown on the street. In 2023, city police issued 16 fines to people who dumped their cigarettes on the sidewalk.
The city boss caused a stir by closing the prayer center
The mayor from the ranks of the right-wing ruling party Lega has been making the news again and again lately. 8,000 Muslims from different Italian regions gathered in Monfalcone shortly before Christmas to protest the mayor’s decision to close some prayer centers. “We are Muslims and we are Italians,” emphasized the demonstrators who came from different parts of Italy. Cisint recently closed some prayer centers because they did not meet the necessary safety standards. Fundamentalist terrorism is also said to be glorified in prayer centers.
Mayor also wants to ban burkinis
The mayor of Monfalcone is known for her anti-Islam views. In an open letter to the Muslim community last summer, she called on them to observe ‘Western beach customs’ and not swim in the sea with clothes on. She threatened to ban the burkini, a women’s swimwear that covers the entire body except the face, hands and feet. There were solidarity demonstrations with Muslim women against their plans.
