Despite bankruptcy, choir boys are sitting on real estate treasures

Date:

The Vienna Boys’ Choir was recently rescued from financial misery with 800,000 euros in taxpayer money. And this despite the fact that the world-famous choir has its own property on Lake Wörthersee that is worth several million euros.

Just a few weeks ago, the alarm sirens sounded around the world-famous choir. The boys’ choir had again fallen deeply into the red and was almost a million euros short to continue its activities.

The government responded promptly, promising an appropriate cash injection and thus saving the red-white-red cultural ambassadors from impending bankruptcy. There was applause from (almost) everyone.

But now critical voices are also being heard – especially from Carinthia, where the boys’ choir has a real estate asset. This is a 6.7 hectare estate with a beautiful lakeside area in Sekirn on Lake Wörthersee.

The choir boys and now also girls spend the summer months here. But critics would have preferred the club to sell the property before dipping into the tax pot. Real estate sharks would jump on it. According to reports, there is an offer of 20 million euros.

Boys choir chairman Erich Arthold contradicts this: “Two different reports show a sales value of five and seven million euros respectively.” A sale would only solve the choir’s financial problems in the short term, because: “The summer camps are an indispensable part of the training. If we couldn’t keep them in Sekirn, we would have to stay somewhere else. That would cost about 500,000 euros per season.” In ten to fifteen years the money would run out – and with it the exclusive ownership…
