The first flu cases have already been registered in Austria. The virus appeared about two months earlier than usual, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday. It was advised to get vaccinated against the flu now.
In Austria, an average of 1,000 people die from flu every year. In the past two years, the flu has hardly been discussed due to the corona pandemic and there have been few cases. “Immunity in the population is therefore relatively low, the risk of a strong flu wave is particularly high,” warned the Director General for Health, Katharina Reich.
Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) recalled that the same measures help against flu as against SARS-CoV-2: “Vaccination protects, wearing an FFP2 mask, hygiene measures and keeping a distance also protect.”
The ministry pointed out that the vaccine is already available from local doctors across Austria and that many vaccination campaigns will start in the coming days. Vaccination is generally recommended, especially for people at increased risk of serious courses and for those at increased risk of infection.
