First woman responsible – Italian government around Giorgia Meloni sworn in

Date:

Italian President Sergio Mattarella sworn in the new government under new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Saturday at the Quirinal, the seat of the head of state in Rome. It is the first time that a woman has become prime minister in Italy. Meloni, 45, is the third youngest head of government in Italy’s republican history.

Ministers swore allegiance to the Italian Republic to President Mattarella. The government, the 68th since the founding of the republic in Italy in 1946 and the first in the 19th legislature, comes into being four weeks after the September 25 general election, in which Meloni’s right-wing coalition emerged as the clear winner. Meloni succeeds non-partisan ex-ECB boss Mario Draghi, who has been in office since February 2021 and was ousted in July. The new cabinet consists of 24 ministers, including six women. 19 ministers are politicians and five professionals.

All in all, the new government fits in perfectly with the political balance of power in the coalition. Meloni’s party received nine ministers, Forza Italia around four-time Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the Lega five each. Although Meloni triumphed with her worries, at the same time she managed to satisfy the alliance partners with the skill of an experienced professional politician.

Among the spectators in the Quirinal Hall where the swearing took place was Meloni’s six-year-old daughter, Ginevra. She was held by the hand of Meloni’s partner, TV journalist Andrea Giambruno.
