A French police officer has been seriously stabbed while trying to prevent migrants from crossing the Channel into Britain. When the officer tried to stab a group of 60 migrants in a dinghy on a beach near Calais on Saturday, he was stabbed in the hand, the newspaper Le Monde reported.
The officer, who suffered an artery injury, required surgery. The police tried to identify the perpetrator among the group of men, women and children.
The police destroyed inflatable boats
During the night, police had already destroyed three inflatable boats on the beach that migrants wanted to use to make the dangerous crossing from northern France to Britain. The attack on the police officer came during an altercation with the refugees, in which the officers also used tear gas, reports Le Monde.
According to the police, it is a regular occurrence for migrants to violently attack French officials who try to stop the crossings.
Record number of boat migrants
Paris and London recently agreed to jointly step up the fight against unwanted migration. Britain has long been paying France money for increased border security. The UK saw a record number of nearly 46,000 boat migrants last year.
