During construction work, a diver in the old port of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia found the remains of a sunken ship from the 18th century – only 60 to 80 centimeters below the water surface (see video above) …
The ship was found near the mighty city wall, which surrounds the old city of Dubrovnik. Ivan Bukelic discovered her when he worked on a water pipe in the old port of Dubrovnik in April. “I can now say that I have discovered a boat in the old city of Dubrovnik,” the diver and underwater builder told the American broadcaster CBS.
The wreck was protected for further investigations. “We can’t say anything about the type of ship or its dimensions, but because of the results of the radio cabbage material we can certainly say that it is from the late 18th century,” said Marine -Archeologist Irena Radić Rossi.
Scientific research will be continued in collaboration with the Croatian Ministry of Culture: “We must protect it (the wreck, the note) for the future,” the scientist told CBS.
Dubrovnik, an important trading port in the Adriatic power in the Middle Ages, was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO site in 1979. The city is a popular holiday destination, attracts many tourists, especially in the summer, and also known as a location for the American Fantasy Television Series “Game of Thrones”.
