In 2021, 662 organ transplants were performed in Austria, of which 51 with organs from living donors and 611 with organs from deceased persons. This is evident from the current report of the Organizing Agency for the Transplantation System. At the end of last year, 829 people were on waiting lists, ten percent more than a year earlier.
In addition, 656 stem cell transplants were performed in 13 centers and more than 110,000 stem cell donors were registered in the National Stem Cell Registry. These donors and the registry’s worldwide network ensure excellent patient care. For example, almost 90 percent foreign donors can be found.
Corona worsened situation
As in 2020, the health system was severely tested in 2021 by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The lack of intensive care beds, communication with family members that has been disrupted by hygiene measures, hospital access restrictions and restrictions on international passenger transport have made work much more difficult for everyone,” said Michael Zink, head of Transplant Advisory Plate.
Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens): “In addition to all donors, my recognition goes to those who work in this system and do their utmost to help people’s lives.”
