A 32-year-old and a 26-year-old have been wanted on Traunstein since Saturday. The duo wanted to climb over the northern wall basin, which is currently heavily snow-covered and partly icy. Although relatives say they were very well rested, there has been no trace of the two mountain climbers since Saturday evening.
A Pettenbacher (32) and a Timelkamer (26) planned a winter ascent of the Traunsee on Saturday. The two experienced alpinists probably climbed the north face around 11:30 am.
Difficult circumstances
This route is considered challenging even under normal conditions. However, the fresh snow from recent days is currently covering the ice layer – smaller avalanches have already slid towards the valley several times.
When the 26-year-old’s partner still had no signs of life at 7 p.m., she reported the two missing. An extensive search was immediately launched.
Search has not been successful so far
The Gmunden Mountain Rescue Service, a FLIR helicopter, drone pilots from the Upper Austrian State Police Directorate, their Mobile Operations Center (MEZ) and the Gmunden Alpine Police combed the area until the search had to be halted at 2 a.m. The search continued at 8 a.m. Sunday morning, but so far without success.
