A tragic alpine accident took place on Sunday morning in the Ammergau Alps near Reutte in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern. An ice climber fell to his death in front of a comrade.
At around 10:30 am, the alpinist and a climbing partner were still on their way to the actual icefall in the steep terrain in the Geierköpfe area northeast of the Plansee.
Swept away by snow
For some unknown reason, snow suddenly broke over the two-man rope team and dragged the two alpinists into the depths. The rope then became tangled, stopping the fall.
While one of the two winter sports enthusiasts suffered only minor injuries in the fall, all help came too late for the second man. He died at the scene of the accident. Nothing is currently known about the identities of the two climbers. The accident took place near the Bavarian border.
