Pope Francis was a guest on the private broadcaster “Nove” on Sunday evening. As part of the talk show ‘Che Tempo Che Fa’ (roughly: ‘As the times are’), Francis answered questions from star presenter Fabio Fazio, including one about his possible dismissal for health reasons. He ruled out something like that.
As for a possible resignation, “It is neither a thought, nor a concern, nor a desire, but a possibility open to all popes,” Francis explained. “As long as I feel that I am serving the Church, I will continue, but if the situation changes, that will have to be reflected,” the Pope explained.
Pope complained of ‘mild bronchitis’
When asked how his health was, the 87-year-old replied with a smile: “I’m still alive.” The Pope recently complained of “mild bronchitis,” which meant he was unable to read his speech to an audience on Friday.
The Pope condemned the war and the arms trade. He explained that he was in daily contact with Gaza. The local parish there would report to him daily on the death toll. “Two peoples who should be brothers are destroying each other,” Francis emphasized.
“And that’s just criminal.”
The Pope complained that the international community’s interest in the war in Ukraine had waned. However, it should not be forgotten that the war there continues and is destructive. Children would lose their smiles in the war. “And that is simply criminal,” Francis explains.
The Pope spoke in particular of his shock when he visited the Italian memorial to the fallen Fogliano Redipuglia in Friuli in 2014 – which was the centenary of the First World War. “I saw this cemetery and I cried, I cried so much… So much destruction,” Francis emphasized.
Fazio interviewed Pope Francis two years ago, when his format was still on public broadcaster Rai3. At the time, the show achieved a record audience rating of about 25 percent. It was the first appearance of a pope on a television talk show
