After nearly three weeks of searching in Turkey, an eight-year-old girl has been found dead in a bag in a river about a kilometre from her home village. Narin disappeared on 21 August and a nationwide search was launched for her.
The body was reportedly discovered in a bag in a river. “Initial findings indicate that she was put in a bag after she was killed. The bag was then placed in the river and hidden under branches and stones to avoid raising suspicion,” said provincial governor Murat Zorluoglu.
Investigation against parents and uncles
Since Narin’s disappearance, the Diyarbakir prosecutor’s office has arrested 21 people. Among them is the girl’s uncle, who is being investigated on suspicion of murder and false imprisonment. According to television reports, the girl’s parents and brother are also among the detainees.
Erdogan wants “heaviest punishment”
The case has attracted attention and sympathy across the country, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also involved. After the body was found, he said on Sunday: “The sad news about the fate of Narin, who was brutally murdered, has deeply shocked us all.” He wanted to continue the case “to ensure that those who took Narin from us, receive the harshest punishment.”
