Two avalanches in Tyrol ended relatively lightly on Sunday: In Ausserfern, a ski tourer was pushed against a tree by a snow slab and survived the incident with broken ribs. In the Ziller Valley, another ski tourer used “swimming motions” to stay on the surface of an avalanche.
In the Ausserfern, in Musau, a German (50) went alone on a ski trip to the Nesselwängler Scharte. Around 1:25 p.m. he had to climb a steep gully above the Füssener hut. Just above, a pack of snow about 50 meters wide was released. The man was swept away by the sheet of snow he had thrown and carried across the valley. Moments later he got stuck on a larger tree and was pushed onto it. There was no avalanche funeral.
Witnesses who noticed the avalanche further away immediately drove to the injured person and provided first aid. An emergency medical helicopter performed the rescue; the man suffered several broken ribs and bruises.
Stayed on the surface
In Fügenberg, a Pool (38) climbed the Kuhmöser (2180 meters) alone with his touring skis. At around 1.50 pm he drove from the summit in a south-westerly direction towards Loassattel and released a snow bank about 30 meters wide 100 meters below the summit. The man was swept away by the avalanche and fell. He managed to stay on the avalanche surface with ‘swimming movements’ and was carried several hundred meters to flatter terrain. The 38-year-old was unharmed and was able to descend into the valley independently.
