Louvre attack – activists pour soup on Mona Lisa

Date:

On Sunday, activists poured soup on the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. A video of the incident shows the orange liquid flowing over Leonardo da Vinci’s artwork as the two women pose in front of the painting.

The CLPress news agency, among others, reported on the attack on the Mona Lisa.

“Right to healthy food”
As the video shows, after the attack on the Mona Lisa, the activists climbed through the barrier and read their statement in front of the artwork.

According to an AFP journalist, the two women wanted to use the action to emphasize their demand for “the right to a healthy and sustainable diet”.

Room tidy and cleaned
The T-shirt of one of the activists read ‘Riposte alimentaire’. This is a group that is part of the environmentalist food response movement. This calls for “building a just and resilient society” through “civil resistance.”

Museum officials responded immediately and installed a privacy screen to block the view of the scene. According to AFP, the Louvre has also activated a crisis team. The room where the Mona Lisa can be admired was immediately evacuated and cleaned.

Mona Lisa protected by bulletproof glass
The world-famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci dates from the 16th century. It is protected by bulletproof glass, making it unlikely that it was damaged during the activists’ soup campaign.

Sunday’s attack is far from the first on the Mona Lisa. As early as 1956, an unknown person poured acid on the painting, which was severely damaged in the attack. The same year, a tourist also threw a stone at Da Vinci’s masterpiece. The glass broke and the artwork was damaged.

It wasn’t until 2022 that a man wearing a woman’s wig tried to break the bulletproof glass. He then spread cake on the Mona Lisa.
