Bishop Benno Elbs from Vorarlberg has been apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Vaduz for more than three months. On Friday he will hold a service that his controversial predecessor Wolfgang Haas once canceled.
“Kron”:How do you deal with the people in this recently divided diocese?
Benno Elbs: I feel like people in Liechtenstein are very accommodating to me. I have now visited all the representatives, from the prince to the members of the government to the archbishop. I try to connect with people so that everyone can express their worries and concerns.
What is your relationship with the former bishop?
I had and still have a good relationship with Archbishop Wolfgang, even though we have very different approaches to many issues. We speak on the phone and I have already visited him in Schellenberg.
How do the priests deal with this change?
I experience good cooperation. But one thing is also clear: as a director, it is not my job to shape the future of pastoral work in Liechtenstein. I am there to guide the transition until a new archbishop comes. He may then develop new pastoral priorities with the priests – and more discussions are likely to take place.
What about a successor?
The nuncio spoke about the introduction of a minimum of six months. There would have been three already, but I’m not sure if there will be a new archbishop in three months. It took eighteen months for me to be appointed by Pope Francis.
