“Unsuspecting victims”: fraud with invoices stolen from letterboxes

Date:

The fact that IT fraud is booming is also evident in the courts. The stitches are tricky – and it’s becoming increasingly difficult not to fall for them. Two men got away scot-free with their brutal system in Vienna for years. They have collected hundreds of thousands of euros from their unsuspecting victims. It is quite possible that you were also unaware of this cunning fraud method.

Two indictments at the Vienna Regional Court with similar facts. The first will be heard on Tuesday. The two defendants, a 56-year-old Austrian and a 37-year-old Congolese, face a prison sentence of one to ten years. They perfected a system of IT fraud that operated undetected for years, originating from public mailboxes across the city.
