A left-wing splinter party in France has denounced Marine Le Pen’s right-wing populist Rassemblement National over its proximity to Russia. The background is also a loan granted almost ten years ago by an institution close to Vladimir Putin.
Guillaume Lacroix, president of theThe Radical Party of the Left (PRG) accuses the Rassemblement National (National Assembly) of “secret ties with a foreign power” or “passing on information to a foreign power.” The Left Party bases its opinion, among other things, on research by the Washington Post newspaper.
It was reported in December that Russian President Vladimir Putin also relied on contacts with right-wing extremist parties in his attempt to destabilize Europe. The newspaper reported the loan from a Russian-Czech bank that former MEP Jean-Luc Schaffhauser had negotiated for the right-wing populist party, formerly called the National Front.
Le Pen: Loan repaid, no consideration
Since 2014, when the loan amount was paid, “the party and its leadership have been corrupted and encouraged to spread Russian propaganda,” the PRG stressed on Monday. The Rassemblement National rejects the accusations. The loan has been repaid, party leader Le Pen emphasizes, but there was no compensation for this.
Le Pen’s ties with Russia were one of the main points of attack in the presidential election campaigns. This is how Le Pen was received by Putin in 2017. She had previously declared Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula from Crimea legitimate in 2014.
