Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Ukraine, which he has launched a war against, that its existence as a state will come to an end. The Ukrainian state is threatened with an “irreparable blow” as a result of the actions of the leaders in Kiev, Putin said on Tuesday during a meeting with representatives of local authorities broadcast on state television.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s so-called peace formula is nothing more than a continuation of the ‘ban’ on negotiations with Russia, Putin said. At its heart is the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
Putin: “Ukraine’s counter-offensive has failed”
Putin said no one can force Russia to give up the territories it has conquered so far. “Everyone understands that this is not possible.” The Kremlin chief again described Ukraine’s counter-offensive to regain territory as a failure.
Putin accused Ukrainian forces of shelling Russian border areas, such as the Belgorod region, to distract from their own failures. Moreover, Western sponsors who provide money, weapons and ammunition must be shown in this way that Ukraine is capable of responding to Russian attacks.
According to Putin’s statement, the conflict could have ended a year and a half ago if Ukraine had implemented the agreements reached during the negotiations in Istanbul. The “fools” in Kiev, controlled by the West, then decided to continue the fight.
“Let’s just fight”
Former Ukrainian negotiator and faction leader of Zelensky’s party in parliament, David Arachamija, recently confirmed that Moscow had only insisted on its neighbor’s neutrality during the talks to end the conflict. “When we came back from Istanbul, (British Prime Minister) Boris Johnson came to Kiev and said we won’t sign anything with them (the Russians) – let’s just fight,” Arachamija said in an interview with the 1+1 TV channel .
However, Zelensky would also have needed a meeting with Putin to sign an agreement. Moreover, Kiev hesitated because there were no security guarantees in case a peace deal was signed, Arachamija said. For Ukraine to have a neutral status, the country’s constitution would also have to be changed and the NATO course would have to be changed.
Zelensky calls Putin a ‘predator’
Zelensky, meanwhile, called Putin a “predator.” He would not be satisfied with a frozen conflict in Ukraine. “After 2014, there were attempts to freeze the war in Donbass,” Zelensky said in a speech at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos. He referred to the Minsk Accords, which were intended to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
“Putin is a predator who is not satisfied with frozen food,” Zelensky said. In a frozen conflict, there is little movement on the front lines on either side, but no reliable ceasefire or peace is achieved either.
Zelensky accused Putin of “trying to normalize the mass deportations, the destroyed cities and towns and the terrifying feeling that the war may never end.” Zelensky emphasized: “Putin actually embodies war.” Putin will never change.
