The Hahntennjochstraße in Tyrol was moved during the night on Monday by no fewer than 14 (!) mudslides. After the total closure, the mountain pass that connects the districts of Reutte and Imst was reopened to traffic on Friday. 1000 operating hours were required.
The pass road is known to be prone to mudslides. What happened from Sunday to Monday during heavy storms on the Hahntennjoch is a rarity. Both on Imster and on the Ausserferner side there were several mudslides after the heavy rainfall. In the end there were 14!
The mudslide alarm system immediately went off and the traffic lights turned red. The mountain pass was closed to all traffic. The cleanup work started Monday.
“It was a huge job”
It is not self-evident that the route over the Hahntennjoch has been open to traffic since Friday. “It was a mammoth task for the road maintenance depots in Zams and Stanzach, along with the appointed companies, to remove the fallen material and clean the streets during this time. Since Monday, work has been going on almost continuously – including on public holidays – to make this possible,” emphasizes Bernd Stigger, head of the Imst Building district office.
1000 hours of use registered
More than 15 workers, three excavators, six wheel loaders, a sweeper and a truck were involved in the cleanup effort. According to the state of Tyrol, a total of about 1000 hours of use were recorded.
