A heavy storm front caused chaos in Germany on Thursday. In a very short time, about 400 trees fell, streets were flooded and even the historic city wall of Weißenburg near Nuremberg partially collapsed due to the water masses.
Nuremberg and Franconia were particularly affected. As reported, the apron at Frankfurt Airport was temporarily flooded, leading to numerous flight cancellations and delays.
City walls from the 14th century could no longer withstand
In the afternoon, a thunderstorm supercell brewed around Nuremberg. In the Franconian metropolis, underpasses and cellars were flooded and some sought shelter in the main station. However, the extreme storm also caused serious damage outside Nuremberg. In Weißenburg, the water masses broke along the famous city wall.
According to police, the historic city wall collapsed over a length of 25 meters after it was reportedly soaked with water. As photos show, the monumental building from the 14th century did not collapse completely and the inhabited area was also spared.
Downburst brought “Road of Destruction”
A few kilometers further, in Ramsberg, the storm had recently caused enormous damage. As “vifogra” reports, nearly 400 trees on state highway 2222 fell like matches.
A so-called downburst is probably responsible for the damage. According to the information, the storm has left a “path of destruction” for almost 200 meters in length.
