A construction net embroidered with pink tulle has been attracting attention in Bad Ischl since Friday afternoon. It hangs from the post office, right in the center. Passers-by are surprised because a feminist slogan can be read. It was embroidered by the Tyrolean artist Katharina Cibulka – an opening project for the Capital of Culture 2024.
There was great tension: during lunch the construction network at the post office was rolled out with a feminist slogan. “As long as it lasts, because it’s so great, I’m a feminist” you can read there. The dialect saying was selected from 270 sentences submitted by people from the 23 Capital of Culture communities in Upper Austria and Styria.
“This affects a lot of people”
But what does Cibulka, who has already hung construction nets on buildings with feminist slogans in many European cities, want to achieve? “I want to draw attention to the inequalities between the sexes and stimulate discussions,” she says in the ‘Krone’ lecture.
About the saying that will irritate the imperial idyll in Ischl for about three months, she says: “It’s a great saying. Because many say about unequal treatment: it is what it is. But through the large installation I want to make it clear that the subject concerns many people. The construction network will certainly lead to discussions.”
Mixed reactions
However, some passersby asked, “What is that for?” For tourists, the dialect sense is like a foreign language that cannot be found in Google Translator. In total, the net measures 200 m2, 500 meters of pink tulle have been used and hundreds of cable ties have been used.
Feminist ‘Solange statements’ can already be seen in many places in Austria, including Innsbruck, Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Morocco.
