Series of accidents in Friday morning traffic on the roads of Carinthia! And the fire brigade was constantly busy. Such as was the case on the Tauernautobahn, where a car overturned due to the snow-covered road.
The snowfall was announced for Friday morning, but many motorists were apparently surprised by it. Or even unimpressed. In any case, countless drivers lost control of their vehicles in the white crowds. The volunteer fire brigades Gmünd, St. Peter-Oberdorf and Rennweg, among others, were called to a vehicle rollover on the Tauern highway in the morning hours.
The German driver lost control and crashed into the concrete barriers. After which the car flipped over and landed on its roof. As a result, a following truck driver was no longer able to brake in time and also rammed the accident vehicle. Although only three people were suspected of being trapped in the wreckage, clearance was quickly given at the scene.
The injured motorist was able to free himself, received first aid from the rescue team and was eventually taken to the Spittal an der Drau hospital. During the rescue operation towards Villach, the highway and the Katschberg tunnel were closed. There was also a temporary closure on the Tauern highway near Villach-West in the morning hours due to an accident.
Bus with students ends up in a ditch
A bus full of students skidded so hard on the L74 on a hill near Vogelitz that it went off the road. Fortunately, no one was injured. “The 50 young people had to get out and were taken to Klagenfurt by a replacement bus,” says the FF Moosburg.
A spectacular accident in Treffen also ended slightly: there too, a driver lost control of his vehicle and drove the bus into the building of a window company: “Nothing happened. “Everyone is doing well,” an employee told “Krone”. However, the vehicle has yet to be recovered.
There was also a standstill on the southern highway: several vehicles got stuck on the snow-covered pack saddle near Wolfsberg. The A2 was closed for a long time towards Vienna. In Wernberg too, drivers had to be patient in the “South” after an accident. Crash and blockage in drifting snow also on the Karawanken Autobahn near St. Niklas.
Spruce trees fell on ÖBB’s overhead lines
Tense operation in the true sense of the word for the Krumpendorf fire brigade: Due to the snow load, a fir with a diameter of 20 centimeters landed on three ÖBB overhead lines. Accompanied by a loud bang and spectacular arc. The southern railway line was stationary throughout the operation and the footpath next to the track and under the tree was closed.
Busy activity at the state warning center
In general, there was a lot of activity in the Carinthian State Warning Center. When ‘Krone’ asked, there had been numerous firefighting operations due to traffic accidents and vehicles going off the road. Due to the “extremely slippery road surface”, the city of Villach has even decided to temporarily close the Villach Alpine Route. The risk of vehicles getting stuck is too great.
The St. Martin/Feldkirchen volunteer fire brigade had to respond to two accidents in the morning. On the Flatschacher Landesstraße, a car left the snow-covered road around half past five and ended up in a ditch. When the fire brigade arrived on the scene, the driver had already freed himself from the vehicle. That’s why the fire brigade immediately moved on to the next accident: a bus had skidded off the road and got stuck on a slope between the trees.
