The Academic Ball of the Graz Fraternities will take place on Saturday evening at the Graz Congress. Protesters against the event gathered in the main square. To prevent clashes, the police have issued a ban on the area.
After a three-year break due to Corona, the academic ball of the Graz fraternities will take place again today in the state capital. In recent years, the dance event at the Graz Congress has always been accompanied by loud protests – and this year too, a counter-demonstration at the police was announced in advance. The protest meeting was initiated by the ‘Offensive against Right’ platform.
According to the organizers, the aim is to “send a clear signal” with lots of colorfully dressed people, music and dancing. At 6 p.m., the first participants gathered on the central square and held up banners with slogans such as ‘No ball for fascists’.
To avoid feared clashes between ballgoers and protesters, the administration imposed a ban on the area and deployed a large contingent. The entire Sparkassenplatz, Landhausgasse and Albrechtgasse are affected by the closure.
