In Iran, authorities in Qom province have sent tens of thousands of text messages to women about hijab violations. More than 74,000 violations have been registered on the rural roads of the pilgrim province of Qom since the start of the Persian calendar year in March 2023, the state broadcaster reported on Saturday. About 53,000 warnings were issued at the base. In addition, 7,000 cars were temporarily seized due to violations of the mandatory mask requirement.
Many routes into the interior lead via Qom, which is located south of Tehran. Authorities in Iran’s theocratic system have stepped up their strict enforcement of Islamic dress codes in the past year. In the current Persian calendar year, dozens of cafes in the province were also closed after instructions from authorities over headscarf violations. At the same time, security authorities also tracked online violations, mostly involving images of women without headscarves on Instagram.
A new parliament will be elected on March 1
Following female-led protests in the fall of 2022, more and more women in the country of nearly 90 million people are ignoring strict Islamic dress codes. Religious hardliners are trying to combat this. A new law imposes draconian penalties. The reform has already been adopted by parliament, but has not yet entered into force. Iran will elect a new parliament on March 1.
The protests against the system of the Islamic Republic in 2022 were sparked by the death of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini. Moral guards had forcibly arrested the young woman over an alleged ill-fitting headscarf. Amini fell into a coma and died just a few days later.
