At least 25 people were killed and 20 injured in last Sunday’s Ukrainian attack against a Donetsk marketsaid the leader of the region of the same name that was annexed by Russia in September 2022, the pro-Russian Denis Pushilin.
“At this time we have confirmed information about 25 deaths. At least another 20 people were injured, including two children, both in a fairly serious condition,” Pushilin said in a statement issued by his news agency.
Formerly the mayor of the city, Alexei Kulemzinhad reported 18 deaths and 13 injuries on its Telegram channel, although it noted that authorities were still receiving information about the impact of the attack.
The market affected by the attack is located in the Tekstilshchik microdistrict, southwest of Donetsk. city over which Ukraine lost control in 2014 and that it is located ten kilometers from the front line, therefore within range of the Ukrainian artillery.
The attack on Donetsk comes at a time of escalation of fighting on the Ukrainian eastern frontwhere Russian troops made some progress last day, according to the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Russia assures that it is taking the initiative on all fronts, while Ukraine states that it is maintaining an “active defense” that will contain the advance of Moscow’s troops.
