The ban on fishing in French waters of the Bay of Bizkaia comes into force

Date:

Fishermen have shown their anger, warning that the supply of hake, monkfish or rooster will decrease. In this sense, the Basque government has warned of a possible price increase.

This Monday, the ban on fishing in French waters of the Bay of Biscay imposed by the French government will begin, which will last until February 20 and aims to protect dolphins during their mating season. The Spanish government has joined France’s decision and will also ban fishing, although it has not yet specified the closure period or how many boats the measure will affect.

The Basque farmers are angry and concerned about the decision. Only in the port of Ondarroa Two trawlers will have to stop completely from Monday, and two others will have their fishing areas very limited. In concrete terms, they will no longer go to the fishing grounds for hake, monkfish or roosters. That’s why they warn that supply will decrease, they say, and prices will rise. As things stand now, they estimate that about 120,000 kilos of fish will no longer arrive.

French fishermen will receive aid worth 80% of losses, while arrantzales criticize this The Spanish government will only insure 25% of the losses.

In any case, the temporary ban on fishing is a response to a historic claim by environmental groups and also by the EU to protect dolphins.

‘It could increase prices’

The Basque Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapia, explained last weekend that the measure will affect four Basque deep-sea vessels and “could increase prices”.

Tapia has warned that one of the species that could be affected is hake, although there “will not be a shortage”. “Maybe the catches are a little smaller, which could cause the price to rise,” he added.

In this sense, Tapia has acknowledged that the Basque executive will carry out a “very in-depth” analysis and monitoring “of what may happen in the fish market area of Pasaia, where most of this can be sold and handled.” kind of fish.”

On the other hand, and given the possibility of possible “extensions” of the ban, he has acknowledged that it will have to be assessed “how we can conserve dolphins and fish sustainably at the same time“If the ban expands over time or years, that is an issue we will have to evaluate and analyze,” he added.
