Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suffered a historic defeat in the British general election on Thursday, with his Tories coming in well behind Keir Starmer’s social democratic Labour Party.
Millions of people can cast their votes until the polls close at 11 p.m. The first forecast, based on post-election surveys, already shows a more than clear picture.
Debacle for Sunak
And this points to a debacle for incumbent Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. As pollsters reported in the run-up to the election, he was soundly defeated by the opposition Labour Party.
Complex voting system
About 46 million voters are eligible, and all 650 seats in the lower house are allocated by direct mandate. The absolute majority in the lower house is 326 seats. In the last election in 2019, the Tories won 365 seats, Labour had 202 seats. In the British majority vote, only the candidate with the most votes wins the constituency. All other votes have no effect.
The Tories have been in power in Britain for 14 years, with prime ministers such as Boris Johnson and Liz Truss at the helm.
