Serious traffic accident in Scheifling (Murau district): A 21-year-old may have fallen asleep at the wheel of a van and collided head-on with an oncoming car. The driver was seriously injured. Another car was hit: a total of five people were injured.
The emergency services saw a terrible scene at the south tunnel portal of the Scheiflinger Ofen on Monday morning. A van and two cars were involved in a serious accident, with several people seriously injured and trapped in the vehicles.
Microsleep suspected
According to police, a 21-year-old from Linz probably crossed the oncoming lane shortly before the end of the tunnel because he was micro-sleeping. He crashed his van into an oncoming car, driven by a 68-year-old from the Murau district.
A car following the woman, driven by a 58-year-old, failed to brake in time and collided with the van. The two occupants of the small truck and the 68-year-old were trapped in the vehicles. Firefighters rescued people from the completely damaged vehicles.
Accident victim seriously injured
After initial treatment, the 68-year-old was flown by rescue helicopter to the Judenburg Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 21-year-old and his 48-year-old passenger, also from Linz, were also taken to hospital by the Red Cross with serious injuries. The 58-year-old and his 61-year-old wife escaped with minor injuries.
