Within an hour and a half on Sunday, a robber in Graz attacked a Jet gas station in the north of the capital and a McDonald’s branch in the south. And in both cases, drug-addicted Grazer failed. The 43-year-old is now in custody.
Shortly before 2 p.m., an unknown person entered the Jet gas station on Wiener Strasse. The man, masked with a hood drawn, demanded cash and threatened the cashier with a pocket knife that he took from the sleeve of his jacket.
Victim ran away
But instead of giving the money, the shocked woman ran away. The perpetrator had to flee without any loot. The cashier was unharmed. The police started the investigation and also conducted an internal investigation based on an image from the surveillance camera.
Two police officers saw this photo on their mobile phone around 3:30 PM when they were at the McDonalds on Conrad-von Hötzendorfstrasse in their spare time. And she probably couldn’t believe it when she saw this exact suspect standing at the cash register of the fast food branch.
Bomb threat scrawled on the newspaper at the crime scene
That’s where the drug-addicted robber made his next attempt. Sitting at a table, he had scribbled a bomb threat demanding money on a magazine, which he held under the nose of an employee.
Employee could not read paper
But the employee did not speak German very well and did not understand what the man with the half-hood wanted from him. Only another employee realized the seriousness of the situation and alerted the police. The unfortunate robber’s pocket knife had previously fallen from the sleeve of his jacket.
The two off-duty police officers had also informed their colleagues. They followed the suspect as he fled on foot. Shortly afterwards, uniformed officers arrested the thwarted robber.
Hopeless financial situation
The Styrian State Police robbery group took over the investigation. The drug addicted man from Graz, who is known to have committed property crimes, immediately confessed. Due to his desperate financial situation (“I am completely exhausted”) he is said to have seen the raids as the only way out.
