Following a drone attack on an important Russian gas terminal near the border with Estonia, production in Ust-Luga had to be temporarily halted. The Kremlin on Monday called it a “terror attack”.
As reported, there was a drone attack on the port of Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea on Sunday night. As a result, a fire broke out at the terminal, which is owned by major Russian natural gas producer Novatek. According to the head of the Kingisepp district administration, Yuri Sapalatski, this could only be removed a day later.
Ukrainian media first reported the attack. While the Russian Defense Ministry only mentioned the defense against enemy drones, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted the hit on Monday. At the same time, he assured that Russia was taking all necessary measures “to protect against such terrorist attacks.”
Major export port for energy resources
Novatek itself states in a press release that an “external influence” was the cause of the fire. Ust-Luga is one of the most important Russian export ports for energy resources. Novatek temporarily closed not only the damaged terminal, but also the adjacent plant for processing gas condensate into light gasoline, diesel kerosene and fuel oil. There is still no official information about the extent of the damage.
