Fight against Houthis – EU agrees on military deployment in the Red Sea

Date:

EU countries reached an agreement on Monday on a military operation in the Red Sea. This is aimed at securing merchant shipping after attacks by the Houthis, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.

EU foreign ministers met in Brussels on Monday to debate the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz and his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba also participated (via video).

Regarding possible decisions, it was said in advance that an agreement could be reached on a military mission to protect shipping in the Red Sea. However, the formal decision will only be possible during the next Foreign Council on February 19.

Houthis: “Axis of Resistance”
The background to the military operation is the attacks by the Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran. Since the start of the war in the Middle East on October 7, they have attacked numerous ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The militia sees itself as part of the self-proclaimed “Axis of the Resistance” aimed against Israel. The US military has already forged an alliance and responded with a series of attacks on positions in Yemen (see video above).

The US military recently declared dead two elite soldiers who had gone missing since an operation off the Somali coast against an Iranian weapons shipment for the Houthis. They were not found after a 10-day search, the report said. According to the US regional command Central Command (Centcom), the intercepted ship was carrying Iranian missile components destined for the Houthis.
