After a truck collided with a Bim and overturned in Vienna-Donaustadt on Monday evening, the driver of the truck is now in hospital. He had to be taken to the trauma room. Four other people were also injured.
A total of five people were injured in Monday’s serious accident. According to Daniel Melcher, spokesman for the Vienna Professional Rescue Service, the truck driver was hit hard. The 42-year-old was trapped in the vehicle when the truck tipped on its side. He suffered injuries to his upper body, including suspected fractures and internal injuries, and was taken to a hospital trauma room.
The tram driver and three passengers on line 25 escaped with minor injuries. The driver refused to take him to a hospital. The passengers were taken to hospital with bruises.
Hours of cleanup work required
The accident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Langobardenstrasse and Trondheimgasse. The truck overturned and the tram partially derailed. The cause is being investigated. The accident required hours of clean-up work and a large-scale deployment of the professional fire brigade.
Route only open after midnight
The tram line was only reopened after midnight. The professional rescue team was on site with the special task force and was supported by the Workers’ Samaritan Association and the Green Cross.
