Before visiting Ukraine: Death threat against Hungarian Foreign Minister

Date:

A few days before his meeting with his Ukrainian colleague Dmytro Kuleba in the Ukrainian city of Uzhhorod, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is confronted with a death threat. In a letter written in Ukrainian, the unknown author warns of an “explosive reception” for Szijjártó in the tri-border area between Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine.

The threatening email was received a few days ago by the Hungarian embassy in Kiev. “Hungary, we hate your government, which is constantly doing everything it can to ensure that we lose this war. Do you think your minister can just come here after all the attacks on us? “We do not agree with this,” Hungarian media quoted from the letter.

“Even an armored train offers no protection”
An “explosive reception” is announced for January 29 in Uzhhorod. Even an armored train wouldn’t provide any protection, they say. State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Tamás Menczer emphasized in a statement that you should not be intimidated by such threats. The meeting will take place. “Anyone who thinks that the Hungarian Foreign Minister is now afraid does not know Péter Szijjártó,” Menczer emphasized.

Unlike other EU countries, Hungary’s leadership has shown demonstrative ties with Moscow since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, but EU sanctions against Russia are largely supported. However, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently blocked an increase in the EU’s multi-year budget to finance additional aid to Ukraine.

The threatening letter also does not change the position of the Hungarian government: Budapest continues to demand an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations – without the conditions that Kiev has already stated several times.
