The Israeli army says it has killed more than a hundred terrorists in the town of Khan Younis. The army had only recently reported that it had surrounded the heavily contested city. Khan Younis is considered a stronghold of the Islamist Hamas (see video above).
Israeli forces attacked military positions and ‘terrorist infrastructure’. In recent days they destroyed a mile-long network of tunnels and a missile-building facility, it was said. More than a hundred terrorists are said to have died. “The troops killed many terrorist cells with sniper, tank and air fire,” army spokesman Daniel Hagari said. Weapons were found during raids in the city.
The information could not initially be independently verified. The Israeli government and military suspect that both the Hamas leadership and the Israeli hostages are in the tunnel network in the area.
The army called on people to flee
On Monday, the Israeli army announced it would expand its offensive in the southern Gaza Strip. Eyewitnesses reported heavy fighting between Hamas and the army in Khan Younis. Thousands of Palestinians fled in cars or on foot towards the city of Rafah on the border with Egypt. The Israeli army had previously called on the population to leave an area of about four square kilometers. In total, about 88,000 people live in the region, plus about 425,000 internally displaced people.
Also fight in the north
According to the army, fighting also continues in the north and in the center of the closed coastal strip. The armed forces are working around the clock to create conditions for the return of the hostages, spokesman Daniel Hagari said.
Since the war began on October 7, 1,200 people have been killed in Israel and more than 25,000 in the Gaza Strip, although this cannot be independently verified.
