A weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 occurred on Thursday night around 1:30 am west of St. Ulrich am Pillersee (Kitzbühel district). According to the earthquake service GeoSphere Austria, the series of earthquakes that has been going on for more than two weeks has continued.
More than 60 measurable earthquakes have already been recorded in the region, but the population has only felt a fraction of them. Most recently in the Waidring/St. Johann in Tyrol, several noticeable tremors occurred. Strengths up to 4.0 were measured. In some cases the earthquakes were perceived as thundering or rumbling from underground.
The earthquake agency recently expected the earthquakes in the region to last “several days.” The Pillerseetal region is actually one of the regions in the state with a low risk of earthquakes. The last time a similar sequence occurred was in 1921, when the Earth shook repeatedly for five months. The magnitude was comparable to the current earthquake of more than 100 years ago, with a magnitude of up to 3.8.
