“It was all just mud,” is how a farmer harshly describes the condition of one of his pigs, which was found in the trunk of two Romanians. Part of the loot that the men took in Lower Austria in the summer of 2023. “We saw it next to the road,” a 29-year-old explained in the Krems regional court.
Police found strange stolen goods when they stopped a car in Weitra in the Gmünd district (Lower Austria). There was a pig in the trunk just squirming. Also in the car: a Romanian father-son team that now has to answer to the jury in Krems.

How did the animal end up in the men’s trunk? “We saw it along the road. The pig was very seriously injured. When the police stopped us, he was already dead,” the 29-year-old son tries to explain to the judge. However, the evidence suggests otherwise: the associated farmer could be identified by the artiodactyl’s ear tag. He soon noticed that the wire fence leading to the pig enclosure had collapsed and not far away he found an iron bar.
And that also suited the condition of the animal: “It was all just mud,” was how the farmer described the pig’s head. The Public Prosecution Service accuses him of animal abuse and must have died as a result of several strong blows. There was also a meat tenderizer in a paper bag on the passenger seat of the car…
550 euros demanded for tortured pig
The two did not torture the pig, they found it already injured. But the 60-year-old father has to admit: “I’m sorry, we should have called someone.” Because they simply loaded it into the trunk of their car, the crime of theft was also satisfied. The farmer is demanding 550 euros in compensation for his cattle and 75 euros for his fencing.
Last summer, the Romanians captured not only a cloven-hoofed animal, but also 41 luxury bicycles. This includes a racing bike for 13,000 euros and an e-bike for more than 11,000 euros. They resold them in their home country and made their money that way. For this – and for the killed pig – the younger man now has to spend two years in prison. His father receives a six-month prison sentence and sixteen months’ probation.
