Major search operation on Saturday evening in the Tyrolean Oberland: After an accident on the Fernpass road near Nassereith (Imst district), the initially unknown driver fled on foot. An operation was launched involving mountain rescues, police, dog patrols and water rescue. The Fernsteinsee was also searched. The driver of the accident was finally found hours later.
The accident apparently happened around 12.15pm on the B179 between Fernsteinsee and Nassereith. The initially unknown driver is said to have crashed his car into a wall and then fled on foot.
Searched the entire area and the lake
The driver could not initially be found. That is why a major search was launched, the police said when asked by “Krone”. Mountain rescue, police, dog patrols and water rescue searched the entire area for the fugitive driver.
A drone was also used. And the Fernsteinsee there was also searched. Failed.
Hours later, shortly before 5:30 am, the all-clear was finally given. “The man, a 22-year-old Austrian, was found in the center of Nassereith on Postplatz,” a police officer said.
Alcoholism reason to escape?
The suspect was slightly intoxicated. Apparently that was also the reason for his escape. Further investigations are underway. Appropriate notices will then be given.
