Australian authorities have seized a huge quantity of methamphetamine (crystal meth) allegedly being smuggled into the country from Germany by air. Nearly 157 kilograms of the synthetic drug was seized at Sydney airport late last year, federal police said Friday.
The shipment from Germany was discovered by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers on December 29 and referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for investigation.
Drugs were hidden in 211 packages
During forensic examination of the shipment by AFP officers, 211 packets of methamphetamine were discovered hidden under packaging material in ten boxes. The packages contained a total of 156.8 kilograms of methamphetamine.
The police have started an investigation to find the perpetrators of the smuggling. “Transnational drug syndicates attempting to flood Australia with illegal drugs are motivated solely by greed and personal gain,” said Police Commissioner Colin Hunt. “There is little or no regard for the pain and suffering these harmful drugs cause to people, their families and their communities.”
Euphoric and stimulating intoxicating drug
Methamphetamine – known in the drug scene as armored chocolate, crystal meth or ice – is a synthetically produced substance from the phenylethylamine group. It is used both in medicine as a drug and abused as a euphoric and stimulant drug.
The production, possession or marketing of methamphetamine without consent is a criminal offense in Germany and most European countries. In the US, the substance has been subject to drug legislation since 1970.
