The adult and teenager who performed a Hitler speech on an ÖBB train last May do not have to go to court. Vienna’s public prosecutor’s office announced Friday that a diversion agreement had been reached. The two suspects are now participating in the restart program ‘Dialogue instead of Hate’.
Once the prosecutor’s office receives notification that the adult and juvenile have completed the six-month program, the complaint will be permanently closed, authority spokeswoman Nina Bussek said Friday afternoon. The original investigation was based on a suspicion of National Socialist reactivity under the Prohibition Act. The young man and the teenager are said to have confessed and have acted impeccably so far.
As reported, they ‘hijacked’ the ÖBB loudspeaker system on a railjet from Bregenz to Vienna and played disturbing announcements. To do this they probably opened the intercom stations in each carriage with a key that only Austrian Railways staff have. Instead of the usual information, a Hitler speech with “Heil Hitler” and several cries of “Sieg Heil” were suddenly heard. Furthermore, the information was incorrect and meaningless for several minutes.
ÖBB: No room for hatred
Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB, apologized to the president of the Jewish Community of Vienna (IGK), Oskar Deutsch, after the incident. Anti-Semitism and hatred have no place at ÖBB, “neither on the train nor anywhere else.” The two perpetrators, who were identified through surveillance cameras, were no strangers to the company. They had previously entered railway facilities and trains without permission, some of them wearing ÖBB clothing.
