Vorarlberg wants to oblige asylum seekers to do community service and take German courses – is this also a problem for Vienna? In any case, Social Affairs Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) is not very enthusiastic.
Daily pro-Palestinian demonstrations with anti-Semitic slogans, a rapid rise in unemployment among young foreigners – Austria’s asylum policy is currently under scrutiny. Now the ruling People’s Party in Vorarlberg is taking a controversial step. This is called the “Vorarlberg Code”. The country requires refugees to sign a confirmation that they must, among other things, take German courses and perform community service. In case of violations, social benefits are reduced.
Applause for this does not only come from politicians from the turquoise camp. Even in red-governed Carinthia, people are certainly open to “a mandatory social and integration year”. It is not yet clear what regulations at state level in Vorarlberg or Carinthia could look like. And what do people think of it in Vienna?
