Religiously motivated groups spread extremism through social networks, but in Germany they are already taking to the streets. The Political Islam Documentation Center sounded the alarm early on, but little happened. Some Islamists also sit quietly in Vienna’s municipal housing…
Where do the demonstrators come from who recently took to the streets in Essen, Germany, calling for a caliphate, with flags decorated with Arabic characters reminiscent of IS? It was striking that men and women walked through the streets separately.
“Regarding the call for a caliphate in Essen, we can point out that it is the influence group ‘Generation Islam’ that organized the demonstration there,” says the Political Islam Documentation Center in Vienna, which was published in the spring, raising the alarm in its report on extremist influence groups and their influence on German and Austrian Muslims. The “Krone” reported about it.
Internet as a useful hub for propaganda
Such groups arouse fear, promote distrust of the democratic constitutional state and cheer on the Taliban. Current topics are promoted in German on video channels. So far, most of it has been online.
Ahmad Tamim, the head of “Generation Islam”, was also present in Essen. The current Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution confirms that his group belongs to the ideological environment of the Islamic organization Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT). The HuT itself aims to establish a caliphate – and calls for the destruction of Israel “through militant jihad”.
Viennese Islamists are in the community building
The activities of some actors in the local capital are no less disturbing. The organization Dar al Janub, an association for “anti-racist and peace policy initiatives”, is causing great concern among observers. Those responsible are also distributing highly questionable Hamas-related content online, as well as a manual on how refugees should behave if stopped by police.
ÖVP integration spokeswoman Caroline Hungerländer warns: “Dar al Janub is a clearly anti-Semitic, anti-Israel association that openly spreads Hamas and Islamic Jihad propaganda. The club is located in a municipal building in the 16th district – either unnoticed by the city of Vienna or consciously tolerated.”
